Stephanie Hunter- Sorbel: Oglala Sioux, Pine Ridge Reservation - Stephanie began beading at the age of ten, always watching family and friends and helping when she could.

She is self taught in the field of quill work and follows in the footsteps of her talented mentors with finely executed beadwork on:
  • Cradleboards
  • Three sided bags
  • Moccasins
  • Amulets
  • Dolls
  • Quill work

Stephanie work captures both the intricacies of traditional Lakota geometric design and a little spice she calls her own touch.

“The Traditional Wedding”

She wears a dress with a beaded yoke, a leather belt with conchos and a drop. Her moccasins and leggings are also beaded with conchos. Her hair is represented with buffalo hair attached to her head.

He wears an elk hide beaded war shirt with beaded leggings and moccasins and a war bonnet.

They are tied at the hand to represent the bonding for life and wrapped in a beaded courting blanket. The story is attached with this couple.

“My Badlands”

A contemporary fully beaded Lakota cradleboard titled “My Badlands”. This skillfully designed and hand fabricated baby carrier with carved wooden cradle boards embodies several metaphorical connections to the Lakota way of life and their world-view.
A solid sky blue background provides a meaningful contrast to portray the beautiful sky we have on the reservation and geometric sun with the turtle on top of the cradle board brings meaning that this is a child of the sun people of the Great Lakota Nation. The badlands represent the place where I have grew up and fell in love with the peace and tranquility of the sacred earth. There is also a mirror attached to the top to ward of bad spirits. The animals are in representation of the baby.
Dimensions: 63 inches long (including fringe) by 7 1/2 inches wide by 7 1/4 inches deep all done in size 11 and 12 seed beads.
